Vocabulary

Plain-English definitions

System

An organized set of interconnected subsystems and technical elements that accomplish an overall function.

Subsystem

A set of components that performs a specific function within a system.

Component

A piece, part, or device within a subsystem that carries a primary technical function.

Critical Technology Element

A novel or high-risk technology element that is critical to project success and should be assessed separately.

Desktop Environment

Paper studies, calculations, and documented analysis for the technology under development.

Breadboard

An integration of components used to determine concept feasibility, usually resembling the final system in function only.

Brassboard

An improved prototype after the breadboard that demonstrates stronger technical feasibility.

Cross-Technology Effects

Performance interactions that occur when one technology element influences another in an integrated system.

Integrated Product Team

The product-owning team that monitors technology development and TRA outputs.

Interfaces

Mechanical, thermal, data, electrical, magnetic, or other links that keep components physically and functionally connected.

Simulated Environment

A test setting that reproduces operational requirements or conditions for the final system.

Relevant Testing Environment

A lab or controlled setting that simulates important and stressing operational aspects.

Operating Environment

The intended environment with real operational requirements, platform constraints, packaging, and use conditions.

High Fidelity

A prototype level that closely looks, behaves, or integrates like the final product.

Low Fidelity

A prototype level that illustrates basic function without final detail or realism.

DT&E

Developmental Test and Evaluation, used to verify whether a system meets requirements.
